Garden Spells: Faith, Hope and Charity
The starting point for making this series of work was the painting Mary Nazarre by Dante Gabriel Rossetti showing Mary as an ordinary girl, simply dressed, and being occupied with ordinary, everyday activities. Inspired by Magic Realism where magical, elements blend with the real world and the most unexpected and incredible things are possible, I went into the garden.
Garden Spells is also the title of a magic realism novel by Sarah Addison Allen about an enchanted apple tree and the extraordinary people who tend it. Faith, Hope and Charity are a group of Christian martyred saints, three key Christian virtues, three gloster Gladiator biplanes who defended Malta against the Italians during the WWII and three fairies in a poem, The Faerie Queene, by Edmund Spenser. |
