Our Olympic Dreams zine is now available, being distributed at South London Gallery in Camberwell, Photofusion in Brixton and other south east London venues. The work can also be seen at: https://olympicdreamssite.wordpress.com/ In collaboration with Jackie Brown, Leonie Cronin and Laura Moreton-Griffiths, as part of the Olympic Dreams project, I have created a new topical series of work. These were photographed during mini-residencies at Ladywell Arena and Crystal Palace Athletics Stadium where we made full use of the facilities.
This new series Domestic Heptathlon works with everyday materials to create an alternative homespun Olympics. Inspired by the history of women being barred from the stadium it looks at some of the restrictions women face in their quest to participate and suggests ways in which they can overcome some of the barriers they face. The competitor number 11 was chosen because of an article by John Tunis in the New York Evening Times in 1928 with the headline ‘Eleven Wretched Women’ in which he fictitiously reported that of eleven women who ran their first Olympic 800 metres only one finished intact, resulting in women being barred from the race for the next 32 years! The costume is constructed from dishcloths. Kim Thornton, performative photographer, will be claiming her prize and performing a bridge lift at Tower Bridge on Friday 17 June at 19.45. She will be dressing suitably for the occasion, carefully accessorised with a handbag crafted from non-stick scourers. She will arrive at 19.25 at the North East Control cabin and enter the cabin at 19.30. The bridge will lift at 19.45. MV Balmoral, Britain’s most travelled excursion ship, will be passing through when the bridge lifts. The ship has previously carried royal passengers and took part in the Coronation Fleet Review of Elizabeth II. Last week MV Balmoral demolished a landing pontoon in Cowes so careful attention will be focused on the steering for the event. The prize was awarded following the exhibition Art at the Bridge in the Engine Room of Tower Bridge from March 2014 to February 2015. Thornton’s work Leaving The Harbour was selected as overall winner. Art at the Bridge #6 Local London Art on Display in Engine Rooms 13 April until early 2016 Our latest exhibition in partnership with Southwark Arts Forum (SAF), 'Art at the Bridge #6', is housed in the atmospheric Victorian Engine Rooms. Admire the eight works of art by artists aged 55 years and above from our local community, each of which explore the theme ‘Tides of Change: charting life’s ebbs and flows’ across a range of media. Each of the artists have drawn inspiration from their own experiences and these images offer a striking contrast to the huge and beautifully maintained steam engines that were once used to power the bridge lifts. This successful partnership was established in 2011 as part of Tower Bridge’s ongoing commitment to engage with, and acknowledge, the talents of the local community; and its regular exhibitions provide an opportunity for artists to gain exposure to an international audience of approximately 2,500 visitors daily. Participating Artists: Keith Ashley, Kay Goodridge, Sophie Horton, Dan Knight, David McGrath, Robert Porter, Kim Thornton, Derek Turner |
